American Goulash – Easy and Delicious

Call it American Goulash, call it American Chop Suey…  it doesn’t matter what you call it, you’ll just want to call it tonight’s dinner! This is a delicious and easy meal that the whole family loves!

Beefy Macaroni with a savory yet simple seasoned tomato sauce!  I’ve been making this amazing goulash recipe for years, not only does it taste great but it’s a really quick and inexpensive way to feed a crowd (and so much easier to put together than lasagna!)

What is Goulash?

American Goulash is not the same thing as goulash in other parts of the world are not the same thing! This is NOT the same dish as a traditional Hungarian GoulashHungarian Goulash is which is made with chunks of meat, peppers, paprika and other spices to create a traditional soup.

This particular version is often called Goulash or even American Chop Suey.  It’s similar to a Chili Mac but is more of a tomato sauce flavor (and I skip the chili powder).

When to Add the Macaroni

  • Thicken the sauce: I personally prefer a nice thick goulash so I usually let the meat sauce boil down for a little bit before adding the macaroni.
  • Add Your Favorites: This american goulash recipe is versatile and you can easily add whatever you like. Extra veggies like mushrooms or shredded zucchini, swap out ground beef for other ground meats add extra Italian Seasoning or Chili Powder.
  • Add the Macaroni: If you’re short on time (or prefer your goulash a little bit of a soupier texture) you can certainly just add the macaroni in right away.
  • Top With Cheese: I top this with sharp cheddar to make a cheesy goulash that my kids can’t get enough of! Any kind of cheese will work. If you’d prefer, put it under the broiler for a few minutes until bubbly.

What To Serve With Goulash

We serve it up with some 30 Minute Dinner Rolls and a fresh Italian salad for a complete meal!  To make it extra yummy, serve it topped with a little bit of sour cream!

The great thing about this goulash recipe is that it’s one of those dishes that tastes just as good the next day (or even better). It keeps well in the fridge for a few days but it also freezes perfectly for lunches or meals later in the week!

Can You Freeze Goulash

You can! Goulash will generally freeze pretty well, apart from the pasta. Once reheated, pasta will often become mushy and overcooked.

If you plan to make a big batch of American goulash to freeze some, cook the pasta separately and add it in as you serve the portions.

Easy Homemade Lasagna

Homemade Lasagna is a classic, delicious dinner that every family should have in their recipe rotation. We love serving a classic lasagna dinner, complete with a caesar salad or Italian salad and dinner rolls slathered in Homemade Garlic Butter. It’s the world’s best meal!

Lasagna may seem daunting, and while there are a few steps, this is such an easy recipe – you will absolutely love it. Homemade lasagna recipe is the perfect Italian meal to warm you from the inside out!

A slice of classic homemade lasagna ready to serve

How to Make Lasagna

When you think homemade lasagna, you might feel overwhelmed but don’t worry! The lasagna ingredients in this recipe are easy to prep and while it does take some time, it’s not difficult at all! All you’ll need for this easy lasagna recipe is one pan, one bowl and a 9×13 baking dish!

Here’s what to do to prepare for layering lasagna:

  1. In the BOWL: Mix the ricotta and divided cheeses with an egg in a bowl, and set aside.
  2. In the PAN: Brown the onion garlic and meat in a pot on the stove top. Add the pasta sauce and tomato paste.
  3. In the 9×13: Layer the meat sauce and cheese mixture with noodles and bake until bubbling

To make this into a spinach lasagna, squeeze out most of the moisture of defrosted frozen spinach and add it along with the cheese layer. Lasagna ingredients don’t have to be limited to the ones you see here. Substitute meats or different cheeses, or try different meat sauce variations. Any way you slice lasagna, it’s always delicious!

Ingredients for making the best homemade lasagna recipe

How to Layer Lasagna

Once you have prepared the meat sauce and cheeses, you’re ready to for the layering. This is the fun part! To layer lasagna:

  1. Spread about a cup of meat sauce into a 9×13 pan. Add a layer of noodles.
  2. Top the noodles with some of the cheese mixture.
  3. Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of noodles
  4. Cover with foil and bake.
  5. Remove foil, top with mozzarella and parmesan and bake another 15 minutes.

How Long to Bake Lasagna

Baking time lasagna for this recipe is about one hour total. To get that perfect browned cheese topping, you’ll need to bake it in two stages. After it’s layered, cover it tightly in foil to retain the moisture.

Once cooked, remove the foil, top with cheese, and return to the oven for another 15 minutes, or until the top is browned and your easy lasagna is bubbling.

It’s very important to let the lasagna sit for at least 15 minutes once removed from the oven (even 30 minutes is fine). This is what keeps it from becoming runny and helps it to keep its shape when cut (you don’t need to do this when you’re reheating it though).

Serve this easy lasagna with a chunk of Homemade Garlic Bread.

How to Freeze Lasagna

Lasagna is one of the best meals to make ahead and freeze. I love to make two pans of this easy lasagna recipe, and save one for another day. You can either divide the already baked lasagna into several portions and pack it in freezer safe containers, or freeze the whole pan.

You can also layer the ingredients then freeze before baking. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight and bake as directed.

How To Reheat Lasagna

If you’re baking frozen prepped lasagna, it’s best to pull it out the day before you’re going to cook it so that it has a chance to defrost before it goes in the oven. This prevents it from burning on the edges and undercooking in the center.

If you’ve frozen leftovers, pop them in the oven at 350°F covered, until reheated. This should take about 30 minutes! Of course leftovers are perfect heated in the microwave too!

This Lazy Crock Pot Lasagna is a family favorite!  It seems we’re always off at some activity or event and some nights it seems like everyone is going through a revolving door.  This is perfect because it’s quick to make and we can have it ready for when we get home from soccer practice.

We love lasagna and although there are a lot of steps involved in making a lasagna from scratch, the results are always worth it!  This Lazy Crock Pot Lasagna uses a few shortcuts to make a lasagna dish that takes just about 15 minutes of prep and then cooks in the slow cooker but has the same great flavor.

Saucy Lasagna In Your Slow Cooker

The key to making this taste amazing is to use a high quality pasta sauce, the better the sauce, the better the dish!

Cheese and spinach filled ravioli (or you can use just cheese ravioli) replace the traditional layers of pasta and ricotta cheese making it super simple to put together and no boiling required. Adding the cheese on top right at the beginning of the the cooking allows it to get that yummy crusty edge that I love!

This recipe makes a large batch and I would suggest a 6 quart slow cooker or larger.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love pasta.

It’s easy to prepare, it’s hearty, it’s comforting and it can even be relatively healthy! When the cooler weather hits, this is my favorite of the Rigatoni Pasta recipes that warm me back up from the inside out.

There is just nothing that brings people together more than cheesy pasta! I know I definitely don’t have a hard time getting everyone to the table when the best rigatoni recipe is on it ;)

If your family is the same, you might also enjoy this Sun Dried Tomato Pasta, this Beef Taco Pasta Skillet, this Hamburger Helper, or this Chicken Spaghetti – they’re all super cheesy and comforting!

I wanted to keep this baked rigatoni recipe as simple as possible, but if you’d like to round out the meal, feel free to add in some extra veggies to the sauce: mushrooms, peppers, and zucchini would work perfectly!

What is Rigatoni Pasta?

Rigatoni noodles are short, tubular pasta that is widely available. It’s larger than penne pasta, and not cut on a diagonal.

The shape and large size of rigatoni noodles make them the perfect vehicle for a chunky, meaty sauce like this one! It holds so much flavor in every bite.

Tips for making this Rigatoni Pasta:

  • Don’t have Rigatoni pasta? Totally fine! Any type of pasta will work in this recipe, but I recommend something on the larger end, and something that will be able to grab that thick and hearty sauce.
  • Want to spice it up? Swap out Italian sausage for the ground beef to turn this into a sausage rigatoni recipe, or add in some crushed red chili peppers while you’re cooking the sauce for a blast of heat.
  • To freeze this baked Rigatoni Pasta, cover first in plastic wrap, then in tin foil and label with the name and date. Place in the freezer for up to 3 months. To bake, simply place in the oven at 350 degrees F, covered only with foil, and bake until heated through (this can take 60 to 90 minutes, but you will need to keep an eye on it to be sure). If your baking dish is not freezer-to-oven safe, leave the dish out on the counter for at least 1-2 hours before placing in the oven.
  • To make ahead: you can simply cover in plastic wrap or foil, then refrigerate up to 3 days before baking and serving. It’s perfect for your weekend meal prep, meaning you can make Tuesdays (or Wednesdays or Saturdays) dinner when you have time. (*Tip: if making ahead, pour 1/2 cup water over the pasta, then cover and bake. As it sits, the pasta soaks up the moisture and this prevents it from becoming drier in the oven.)

How to Make Hamburger Casserole

Hamburger Casserole is really easy to make! This meal starts with ground beef (aka hamburger meat) cooked with onions, salt and pepper.

Next I stir in some veggies (I use frozen to make it easy but fresh work well too), tomatoes and McCormick Oregano, McCormick Basil Leaves and McCormick Garlic Powder for flavor! The sauce simmers for a few minutes while the pasta cooks to allow all of the spices and flavors to blend. Finally stir the meat sauce and pasta together top with cheese and bake!

You can count on McCormick for their commitment to pure ingredients and Oregano is no exception – it is an herb that is so versatile and I love the addition in this sauce! McCormick’s Oregano is bright green as a high quality oregano should be. Top Spice Tips

Spices are an easy (and affordable) way to add an abundance of flavor to any recipe for only pennies per dish! McCormick ensures they provide sustainably-sourced spices and have a commitment to quality. Spices last for years if stored properly and I love that I can open up my spice cabinet and be welcomed to a whole world of culinary flavors!

It is no wonder we are able to create meals from recipes that span across the globe, simply because we have the ability to access these delicious spices! Here are my fave tips for keeping your spices fresh:

  • No Heat or Light: Store in a dark space away from heat. Light, sunshine and heat can make your spices deteriorate quickly.
  • No Moisture: To make sure your spices don’t expire more quickly, use a spoon to add spices directly to your cooking pot or skillet to prevent moisture from steam.
  • Do Not Freeze: McCormick doesn’t recommend freezing your spices as it can cause condensation (although red pepper spices like paprika & chili powder can be stored in the fridge to maintain their fresh flavor longer).
  • Use Good Quality: McCormick Spices can last up to 2-3 years if stored properly and one bottle can season countless meals. Spending an extra dollar on a bottle, making sure you’re getting the best possible quality spices, means only pennies per dish. You’ll be amazed at the difference in flavor a quality spice will make!
  • Season Throughout: Layer spices throughout your dish for the best flavor, season and taste each step along the way!

Crockpot Meatballs

Crockpot Meatballs are really easy to make, simply mix the meatballs and let the slow cooker do all of the work. While I often make homemade meatballs or All Purpose Turkey Meatballs, I love putting them into the slow cooker and coming home to a meal ready to serve!

Using simple ingredients like Italian breadcrumbs and seasonings, onion and parmesan cheese, these meatballs are packed with flavor. Smothered in pasta sauce, diced and crushed tomatoes, garlic and even more Italian seasoning, these easy crock pot meatballs really satisfy.

Tomato sauce and slow cooker meatballs made in the crockpot

Once sauced up, these homemade meatballs in the crockpot cook slowly and evenly, keeping all the juices and flavors tucked neatly inside every savory little meatball.

How to Make Meatballs in a Crockpot?

Once you try this crockpot meatballs recipe you it will become your go-to recipe! They’re so easy to make and no frying or baking (which means no extra dishes to wash).

  1. Combine the ground beef, seasonings, breadcrumbs and egg together.
  2. Form meatballs and place raw meatballs in the bottom of the crockpot.
  3. Top with sauce. Cover and let the slow cooker do the work!

Uncooked crockpot meatballs are the perfect meal and so easy to make!

Do you have to cook meatballs before putting them in a crockpot?

No you do not have to cook meatballs before they go into the Crockpot! If I am using ground beef in the slow cooker (when I’m making Crock Pot Chili or Slow Cooker Spaghetti Bolognese) I pre-cook  the beef.  For this recipe and slow cooker spaghetti and meatballs, there is no pre-cooking required, just mix, form into balls and place in the bottom of the crockpot.

I use lean beef in this slow cooker Italian meatball recipe, the juices from the meatballs add amazing flavor to the sauce!

What Should I Serve with Meatballs?

Crockpot meatballs can be served as an appetizer or made into a whole meal!

  • Serve it over your favorite pasta like spaghetti or penne.
  • Turn it into a meatball sub by serving it over a toasted hoagie, top it with mozzarella cheese and broil!
  • Mashed potatoes go with anything, why not meatballs!
  • Create a meatball casserole by adding fusilli, cover with mozzarella and parmesan cheese and bake at 375˚F for 20 min!

While this homemade crockpot meatball recipe calls for a tomato based sauce, you can always change it up! Try it with BBQ sauce, sweet and sour sauce, mushroom sauce or a honey garlic sauce! The meatball recipe itself is just so versatile and is delicious with any sauce!

The meatballs can be prepared the night before and refrigerated. In the morning, simply add to the slow cooker, pour the sauce on and let the crockpot do the work!

Baked Spaghetti

Baked Spaghetti is a favorite casserole around here!  A quick zesty meat sauce is combined with tomatoes and spaghetti and topped with cheese.  This spaghetti casserole is baked in the oven until hot and bubbly.

Just like stuffed shells, this easy recipe is perfect served with  crusty bread, homemade Garlic Butter and a Caesar Salad.

Easy Baked Spaghetti

This easy baked spaghetti casserole is a family favorite that is loaded with flavor!  We love Italian flavors from Easy Meatballs to a simple bruschetta and this cheesy casserole is no exception!

While Million Dollar Spaghetti Casserole contains a lot of cheese in the spaghetti mixture (like cream cheese, cottage cheese or ricotta), this recipe is simple has pasta and sauce with a little bit of cheese on top.

How to Make Baked Spaghetti

Baked Spaghetti Casserole is easy to make, simply prepare the meat sauce, toss with spaghetti and bake until bubbly. The prep can be done then night before and then baked before serving making this baked spaghetti the perfect potluck dish!

  1. Brown beef and onions. Add veggies and tomato sauce and simmer.
  2. Stir in spaghetti and place in a dish.
  3. Top with cheese and bake!

The cheese on top gets golden and crusty making for amazing flavor! Make sure your spaghetti is cooked al dente as the noodles do cook a bit more in the oven and you don’t want them to get mushy.

One great thing about this recipe is that you can add whatever you like to the sauce. If you don’t like green pepper, skip it and add diced mushrooms or zucchini.  You can easily adjust this to your liking and add more or less sauce if you’d prefer.

How Long to Bake Spaghetti

Since the pasta and the sauce are warm when I put this dish together, it usually takes about 25 minutes or so to bake in the oven.  If you prep it ahead of time and refrigerate, it’ll take a bit longer.  Remove it from the fridge about 30 minutes before baking and bake about 35 minutes or until hot in the centre.

Do You Cover Baked Spaghetti

I never cover baked spaghetti because the  crusty cheese on top is my favorite part!  Covering this dish also makes it steam which can overcook the spaghetti.

Serve this with a side salad and garlic toast for an easy meal.  This easy casserole is great leftover and freezes perfectly!
